Thursday: Belgium’s government announced that it is phasing out the country’s current nuclear plants and reactors and will get completely rid of them by 2025 with plans to invest in better and more compact reactors in the future. The current 7 power plants and 2 reactors are based on 20th-century technology. This reactor is operated by French Utility Company Engie.

Under a discussion, an assessment will be prepared to check if Belgium’s energy security can be assured without 7 power plants and two reactors. A final decision will be made in March.

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said ‘ it will not be smart not to have a safety net’, suggesting that plants can stay in function if the need be.

He also said, “we say goodbye to old nuclear reactors and look to the reactors of future”.

The decision is based on the agreement made in 2003 by the coalition of European countries.
