The whole nation was left dishearted on February 6, 2022. The nation received news that the ‘legend of Indian music, ‘Bharat Rattan Awardee Lata Mangeshkar’, left us at the age of 92 years after fighting Covid 19 and giving up to multiple organ failures.

Lata Mangeshkar was a singing legend; who had carried the pride of the country around the globe for the longest time possible.

Early Life

Lata Mangeshkar was born on September 28,1929. to classical singer and theatre artist Pandit Deenanth Mangeshkar in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

She started learning classical singing from her father. By the time she was five, she started participating in plays as an actress written by her father.

In 1942 after the sudden demise of her father, she became the only bread-earner of her family at the age of 13.

Her father’s friend Master Vinayak guided Mengeshkar and offered the role of Lata Mangeshkar in the film Badi maa.

In 1949 she moved to Mumbai where she started learning Hindustani music from Ustad Aman Ali Khan.

Career

In her carrier which was over 8 decades-long, Lata Mangeshkar worked with several legendary music directors including Madan Mohan, RD Barman, and AR Rahman.

She had sang R D Barman’s first song in Chote Nawaab (1961) and last song in 1942: A Love Story in 1994. Her collaborations with Madan Mohan for songs like Lag Jaa Gale. She had also worked AR Rahan for songs like Luka Chuppi from the film Rang De Basanti and O Paalanhaare from Lagaan.

Lata Mangeshkar had sung more than 700 songs for Laxmikant Pyarelal including Mere Naseeb Mein from Naseeb.

In 2012, Lata Mangeshkar decided to launch her own music label called LM Music.

Her last track was Saugandh Mujhe is Mitti Ki-in March 2019, which is a tribute to the army and India.

Awards

In her carrier, Lata Mangeshkar had won many awards. She was the first Indian to perform at the Royal Albert Hall.

She was the recipient of three National Awards, 15 Bengal Film Journalists Awards, four Filmfare.

She was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke award in1989. In 2001 she was presented the Bharat Ratan. She was also respected by getting Padma Vibhushan in 1999 and Padma Bhusan in 1969.

She has been named in the Guinness Record in 1974 and she had also received the highest civilian award of France, Officer of the Legion of Honour in 2007.

Personal Life

Lata Mangeshkar was fond of watching cricket and riding bicycles and she always said in her interview that she always wanted to be a singer or an actress and never thought of doing something else.

Her favorite holiday destination was Los Angeles and her favorite actor from Bollywood was Dilip Kumar.

In her career, she had differences with Mohammad Rafi over the royalty issue of a music album.

Contribution

In her career span, Lata Mangeshkar sang in more than 36 languages making her the only singer to sing in more than 30 languages.

She had contributed to the number of foreign language songs as well making her renowned start around the globe.

Lata Mangeshkar was a legend and her songs and compositions will be alive in the hearts of people for the ages to come because she was able to change the face of Indian music altogether.
