MONDAY: 12 days ahead of the Punjab election, Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim was granted a 21-day furlough. Gurmeet Ram Rahim, who is being held at Rohtak’s Sunaria jail after being convicted of murder and rape, has been granted a 21-day furlough by the Haryana government.
The release of the Sirsa-based sect leader for the next three weeks was confirmed by a jail official. The Dera chairman has been advised to remain at his Gurugram farmhouse. He will not be permitted to visit Sirsa.
“From February 7 to February 20, he will be on furlough. The Dera chief would not be able to meet anyone except his family members. We’ll hand him over to Gurugram cops, who haven’t yet arrived in Rohtak. By the evening, we’ll be able to release him “as per to a jail official.
He had previously been granted emergency paroles from sunrise to sunset to visit his ailing mother, but this time he was granted furlough. According to Haryana jail minister Ranjit Singh Chautala, every detainee has the legal right to a furlough, and the same was given to the Dera chief.
The release of Gurmeet Ram Rahim is viewed as a key step ahead of the Punjab assembly elections on February 20. Many assembly seats in Punjab are influenced by the sect leader from Sirsa.
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar stated that Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s furlough had nothing to do with the upcoming elections, emphasizing that the Dera chief was granted the leave in accordance with the process.
According to Khattar, the Dera chief applied for the furlough a few days ago after serving a minimum of three years in prison.
“Everything has been done in accordance with the law,” the Haryana chief minister added.
GURMEET RAM RAHIM: CASES INVOLVING HIM
A special CBI court in Panchkula, Haryana, sentenced Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim and four others to life in prison in the murder case of former Dera manager Ranjit Singh. In 2002, Ranjit Singh was murdered.
He was purportedly murdered for his claimed role in the distribution of an anonymous letter detailing how the Dera chief sexually exploited women.
According to the CBI charge sheet, the Dera chief suspected Ranjit Singh of being behind the anonymous letter’s distribution and plotted his assassination.
