Tuesday: The Indian government called on the Tamil Minority in Sri Lanka which according to the government is an integral part to ensure equality in the region.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar raised the matter to the External affairs minister of Sri Lanka GL Peiris when he was in the country for better bilateral ties between the countries.
In his statement, the Sri Lanka minister said, ”recalling the positive impact of India’s developmental and rehabilitation support, emphasized that the country’s interests are best served by ensuring equality, justice, peace, and respect for the Tamil people within a united Sri Lanka. Devolution of power is an important aspect of the process”.
Peiris in an interview with Hindustan Times said on Monday that after being the making of the new constitution by the experts which will include the addressing of this issue. He further added that the issue may be implemented by backing national support.
During the delegation-level debate talks on Monday, the two counterparts discussed the bilateral relations and explored ways to strengthen the close and friendly ties. Jaishankar said that “India will always stand beside Sri Lanka during their time of need”.
The statement between the governments said “Both sides reiterated the longstanding consensus to handle fishermen issue through humanitarian approach and refrain from the use of violence in dealing with incidents along with International maritime boundary line (IMBL).
At the time of the meeting, India extended a 500 million dollars line of credit to Sri Lanka to help purchase fuel. India has also given a 400 million dollar currency swap and differed the payment of 515 million dollars which the country owes to the Asian Clearing Union.
