The Supreme court of India on Wednesday decided to provide anticipatory bail to Trinamool Congress leader S. K. Supriya who was appointed as the election agent of the Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee in Nandigram during last year’s assembly elections. He was arrested for a murder case.

Anticipatory bail refers to the bail applied and granted before the arrest is actually made.

The case on Supriya was the murder case of a BJP leader. The CBI is investigating the murder of Debabrata Maity who was abruptly attacked and went missing from Nandigram.

Before going to the highest court, the high court of West Bengal had provided the verdict and directed the investigation agency to investigate post-poll violence cases in the state.

A bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao and Abhay S Oka, however, imposed several conditions while they provided the bail to S. K. Supriya.

In the statement, the Supreme Court stated “We make it clear that the pre-arrest bail granted to the applicant will be canceled if he does not corporate in the investigation. We further make it clear that we have not made any adjudication on the merits of the stated controversy”.

The apex court reserved the order till February 4 when the Crime Bureau of India (CBI) said that the accused leader has been running away from the investigation of the case probed by it.
