At the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday night, 422 runs were scored in the IPL 2022 match between the Lucknow Super Giants and the Chennai Super Kings. LSG, an IPL newcomer, had the last laugh as they chased down 211 with six wickets and three deliveries to spare.
Shivam Dube played a destructive inning after a long time. He smashed 49 off 30 balls including two sixes and four boundaries.
KL Rahul (40) and Quinton de Kock (61) both the openers lay the foundation with a rousing stand. But LSG’s task became increasingly tougher as the needed run rate increased.
Lewis’s brilliant knock and Ayush Badoni’s nine-ball 19 made it look quite simple in the end.
Super kings, on the other hand, were well aware that the total wasn’t always a winning sum.
The pitch was wet, with the umpires changing the ball in both innings and CSK was without Adam Milne. That was a massive blow for Kings as he was out due to a side strain.
Uthappa’s quick half-century set the tone
After being placed in, Super Kings never let up on the brake. Robin Uthappa smashed a 50 off 27 balls, including eight fours and a six. Ravi Bishnoi’s fielding heroics, a direct hit from backward point to run out Ruturaj Gaikwad gave Super Giants the breakthrough.
Moeen Ali, who had opened his account with a hooked six off Avesh, hammered 4,6,4 off Krunal Pandya’s successive balls. The Super Kings were 73 for 1 at the end of the powerplay.
Shivam Dube is back in business
Bishnoi struck once more, this time trapping Uthappa lbw with a delivery that slipped off the surface and best beat the batter with the pace. However, Shivam Dube, who came into bat at No. 4, kept the scoreboard ticking. Super Kings reached 100 in just 9.1 overs after he hammered Chameera of three fours in four balls.
Moeen was struck by Avesh for 35 runs but with the dew on the ground, things didn’t get any easier for Super Giants. The dude’s hard-hitting singles red alert for every opposition. Super Giants poor piece of fielding resulted in a steady stream of runs.
Dhoni and Jadega’s cameo helped the Kings to cross 200-mark
With Super Kings 189 for 4 in 18.2 overs, MS Dhoni walked to the crease and straightway hammered Avesh over extra cover for a six. He smashed a six off the first ball he faced for the first time in the IPL. He sliced the next ball over backward point for a one-bounce four. Jadeja too played a little cameo as he made 16 off 7 balls that helped CSK to set the huge total of 210.
Skipper Rahul and De Kock gave LSG a dream start
The Super joints required a quick start which Rahul and De Kock provided. In the first five overs, they stuck 8 fours and 2 sixes against the experienced New-ball duos Chaudhary and Tushar Deshpande.
For the sixth over, Jadeja went to Bravo, who almost got rid of De Kock, but Moeen dropped a simple catch at mid-off. Two sixes, three fours, and Deshpande blasting a tough chance off Moeen in the next three overs reprieved Rahul. At the mid-stage, Rahul was on 40 off 35, De Kock was on 51 off 35 balls and Super Giants on 98.
Lewis and Hooda’s partnership in the middle played a massive role
Lewis and Hooda both hit boundaries off. Dwayne Bravo in the 16th over to keep the chase alive. In the 17th over, Pretorius gave only nine runs and Bravo sent Hooda in the 18th over after being hit for a six.
Shivam Duby leaked 25 runs in the 19th over
The Super Giants needed 34 runs from the final two overs. After that, Ravindra Jadeja delivered the ball to Dube, who hadn’t bowled yet. Badoni began the over by moving across the field and brushing him over the square leg for a huge six.
The following two deliveries were wides but the final three were perfect for Lewis, who crushed them for 4,4, and 6 runs.
Badoni, LSG’s “Baby AB” finishes the game
Mukesh Choudhary bowled two wides in the last over with nine required before Badoni pulled him over backward square leg to equal the scores. He hit the match-winning run two balls later giving the Super Giants their first victory.
