Another day, another bad news for IPL fans as the England pacer. Mark Wood will not be part of IPL 2022 for Lucknow SuperGaints (LSG) after picking up a right elbow injury during the first Test against West Indies last week, giving skipper KL Rahul and management enormous headache.
Indian Premier League(IPL) is all set to start with a top-class opening match between defending champions Chennai Super Kings(CSK) and last year’s finalists Kolkata Knight Ryders (KKR) on March 26 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
Within the last few weeks, it’s the third English player who will not be a part of IPL 2022. Jason Roy and Alex Hales were among the players who opted out from IPL 2022 citing bio-bubble fatigue.
Wood “will return to the UK next week for a professional opinion over the care of his injury,” according to the ECB, and “shall have an indefinite absence from cricket until additional information from the elbow specialist is confirmed.”
With the third Test in Grenada set to begin on March 24, the team management will decide whether a replacement is required or not.
Given that Wood’s fellow 90mph-plus deadly pacer, Jofra Archer has been out of action for a year after undergoing two elbow operations to treat a stress fracture. In a fresh interview, Jofra said he will be available for Mumbai Indians from next year giving MI management a massive headache. Taking about Woods’s previous performances in England’s 4-0 Ashes defeat, Wood was the standout performer, taking 17 wickets at a strike rate of 26.64, including a career-best 6 for 37 in the fifth Test at Hobart.
At present, Lucknow SuperGaints find themselves in huge trouble as their star players like Jason Holder and Marcus Stonis will also not be available for the first few matches, starting their campaign against Hardik Pandya’s Gurajat Titans(GT) in the opener.
Super Giants definitely need a big player who has the same ability as Wood, to make their team more powerful. After a good performance with England national team, he was purchased by Super Giants for a hefty INR 7.50 crores.
