A special court in Gujarat released its decision on Friday on the 2008 bomb blasts that took place in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad.
38 accused of the attack are sentenced to death with 11 sentenced for life imprisonment.
According to reports, more than 50 people were killed and over 200 people were injured in the mishap that took place back on July 26, 2008.
The special judge A R Patel ordered a death sentence to 38 accused under sections 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections 10 and 16(1) (2) of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and the other 11 are sentenced for life imprisonment under the same sections.
All the convicted prisoners except Usman Agarbattiwala are ordered to pay a fine worth 2.85 lakh rupees. Agarbattiwala has been ordered to pay 2.88 lakh rupees for other 26 offenses done by him under IPC, UAPA, Explosive Substance Act, Prevention of Damage to Public Properties Act, and Arms act.
On February 8, the special court had held all 49 accused guilty in the case while 28 others were left on the benefit of the doubt.
The prosecution had ordered all 49 the death penalty but the defense requested the court to be lenient on the other 11 on the ground of their social and economic condition.
Before the order was passed on February 11, the jail authorities found a 213-foot long tunnel that was already dug up from the Chhota Chakkar area of the jail.
