AUSTRALIAN OPEN SEMIFINALS DECIDED; NADAL KEEPS HIS HOPES ALIVE

20-time grand slam champion Rafael Nadal kept his hopes for the 21st title alive by edging Canadian Denis Shapovalov in a 5 set thriller. Daniil Medvedev came back from a two-set deficit to win the game 6-7(4),3-6,7-6(2),7-5,6-4 setting up a semifinal clash with Stefanos Tsitsipas. Nadal will face Italian Berrettini in the other semifinal. 

Matches will be played on Friday.

By the time this article is written Ash Barty has won her semifinal contest. She is yet to drop a set in this year’s tournament. Danielle Collins has defeated Iga Swiatek to enter the finals. Scoreline 6-4,6-1

Both Nadal and Medvedev have endured 4-hour battles to reach the finals and enter as the favorites. Barty in her current form looks invincible it will be interesting to see how Collins’s fairytale run ends.

Wheelchair tennis legend Dylan Alcott could not enjoy a great farewell. Chasing his record 8th straight title, he fell to the second seed Sam Schroder in front of a packed Rod Laver Arena. The 31year old hangs up his racket forever. He ended up crying in the middle of his conference after he received a text from British Star player Andy Murray. 

With the men’s semifinals still to come, there is a lot of play for and all eyes will be on Rafael Nadal’s quest for glory. Daniil Medvedev has his own set of records to chase. If he wins the Australian open he will be the first men’s player to win his first two grand slams consecutively.

India’s challenge ended on Wednesday with Sania Mirza and Rajeev Ram’s loss in the mixed doubles quarterfinal.

The tournament which began under the shadows of Novak Djokovic’s deportation has moved past it but a few questions remain unanswered. For the fans “All hail the sport”
