New Delhi: The center approved an ‘in-principal’ proposal for the site in Jaitpur, Ratnagiri, in Maharashtra to build six nuclear power reactors of 1,650 MW each in a technical corporation with France. This will become the largest nuclear power generating plant with a capacity of 9,900 MW.
Atomic Energy minister Jitendra Singh informed that the techno-commercial discussion is going on with French Multinational Utility company EDF- in a written submission in Rajya Sabha.
Minister Jitendra Singh informed that the current nuclear power capacity in India is 6,780 MW; the share of the total nuclear power in electricity is 3.1% in 2020-2021. The installed nuclear power capacity grew from 4,780 MW to 6,780 in the past seven-year which is a total increase of 40%. He also informed that the net-zero target is expected to be met via a combination of clean energy sources including the power from the nuclear power plants.
The plan is to increase the capacity by 22,480 MW by 2031.
The government has allocated 250 crores for the pre-project activities to be held in February 2022. The detailed design and the analysis of the plant is under process in Indira Gandhi Center for atomic research.
