In a dominant all-around performance, India has beaten Sri Lanka by a huge margin of 222 runs and an innings to spare. Both the teams are in their transition phase, Sri Lanka is rebuilding its team while the Indian team played its first test under Skipper Rohit Sharma.
The test match got significant attention for being the 100th test match for the prolific former captain Virat Kohli. He also completed 8000 test runs in the same match.
“Rockstar” Jadeja
Australian legend Late Shane Warne used to call Ravindra Jadeja “Rockstar” for his flamboyant persona and brilliant performance in all aspects of the game. Jadeja couldn’t have paid a more befitting tribute to the legend. In a one-man show, he scored a thumping 175 runs and took 9 wickets in total.
He batted patiently with Pant after the top-order batsmen got out without converting their starts. His partnerships with Pant, Ashwin, and Shami helped India post a mammoth total of 574/8.
During his innings, he broke the record of highest score by an Indian Batsman coming in at number 7. The previous record was held by Kapil Dev, who scored 163 against the same opposition in 1986.
He became the third Indian after Vinoo Mankad(1952) and Polly Umrigar(1962) to score 150+ and take a 5 wicket haul in the same match
Record-breaking Ashwin
Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has a knack for breaking records. In yesterday’s match, he surpassed Kapil Dev(434 wickets) to become the second-highest wicket-taker for India in Test matches(436 wickets).
He is 9th on the all-time wicket-takers list and he has a great opportunity to surpass number 8 Dale Steyn(439 wickets) in the next match.
Fascinating Pant
The southpaw was a menace on the pitch as he hammered the Lankan Bowlers all over the Mohali Stadium. He hit 4 sixes and raced to a 97-ball 96 before he was cleaned up by Suranga Lakmal.
His innings are of special mention as he shifted the momentum towards India in the last session of Day 1.
Sri Lanka collapse
This team was already weak and they had called back veterans Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, and Dhananjay de Silva for the rescue but they could not stop the Indian Juggernaut.
They dealt a major blow on the first day itself when Speedster Lahiru Kumara picked up an injury and has been ruled out of the second match.
Their batting didn’t impress either as they lost 16 wickets on the third day of the test match.
Ravindra Jadeja was acknowledged Man of the match.
