New Delhi: On Monday, Loksabha passed the amendment in the Election Bill 2021, according to which it is mandatory to link Adhaar cards with Voter’s Id Card. The bill was passed via voice votes in Loksabha.
This bill enables the electoral registration officer to ask the Adhaar number of the people who want to be registered as voters, for the purpose of identification. The new amendments also enable the electoral registration officer to seek the Adhaar Number of already enrolled voters for the purpose of authentication in electoral rolls. The Adhaar number will also help to find out if the voters try to cast their vote in more than one constituency.
The amendments do not allow denial of any request any inclusion in the electoral roll and no entry in the electoral roll shall be deleted due to the inability of an individual to furnish the Adhaar Number for as may be prescribed reasons.
The bill also seeks amendments in the Representation of the People act 1950-1951.
The statement of object states that Section 23 of RP act 1950 will be amended to allow linking of Adhaar numbers to voter’s Id cards for stopping voters to cast votes in more than one constituency.
