Peacock idol theft: High Court calls HR and CE head for not filing a report of a problem

The High Court of Madras on Monday ordered the Commissioner of the Hindu Religious and head of Charitable Endowment department to appear in front of the court on 31st January 2022 to find the reason for the delay in finding the peacock idol from the Arulmigu Kapaleeswarar Temple as part of the fact-finding team.

The order of summoning the heads was passed by acting Chief Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari and Justice PD Audikesavalu after hearing the plea addressed by Rangarajan Narasimhan, a resident of Sri Rangam. He demanded for the finding of the idol and the reason for not preventing the theft from the heads.

In the order the bench of judges observed ,”We are summoning commissioner of HC and CE to explain the development in the fact-finding committee for inquiry which was formed in 2018. The Commissioner will have to explain the delay for not submitting the report for the same, the bench added.

Along with statement given by the bench, the acting Chief Justice expressed his disappointment with the failure of the fact-finding committee who were unable to crack the theft.

When asked by the court, the commissioner told the court that the inquiry for complete by 90% and the court shall have the report in the next three months. The commissioner also added that the complaint for the theft was registered in 2018 even though the mis-happening took place in 2004.

The court is expected to form the decision on the problem when the commissioners are observed to appear in trhe court on the coming Monday.
