After heavy rains hammered the southern portion of the state today, creating significant waterlogging, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for five districts in Tamil Nadu: Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Puduokottai, and Nagapattinam. Many residential neighborhoods and hamlets were also extensively flooded, resulting in the closure of schools and colleges.
Roads and trains in the five districts were flooded, prompting the closure of schools and institutions, as well as the flooding of several residential areas and hamlets. Thoothukudi received 25 cm of rain until the evening on Thursday, with heavy rainfall.
On Thursday, Thoothukudi recorded 25 cm of rains till the evening, with heavy rains continuing to lash the district on Friday morning. Due to low visibility, flights were rerouted to the nearby Tiruchirapalli airport. Train service was also disrupted as tracks were flooded.
Lightning and thunder were reported in Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Dindugal, Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai, and Nagapattinam districts, with rivers and streams overflowing. Heavy to very heavy rains are expected to continue until Monday, according to IMD, though the cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal is unlikely to coalesce into a low-pressure area. Near the Courtallam waterfalls, flash floods were reported.
Tirunelveli and Tenkasi districts also received heavy rains, with a majority of residential areas in these districts waterlogged and several residences near the river banks damaged.
Meanwhile, Chennai has been issued a yellow alert by IMD on Friday and Saturday. with Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts also expected to receive heavy rainfall until Sunday.
People living in low-lying areas have been given warnings for the same.
The district administrations of Chennai Nagapattinam, Tiruchi, Tiruvarur, Vellore, Pudukottai, Virudhunagar, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Villupuram, Myladuthurai, Tiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram, Kallakuruchi and Tanjavur declared holidays for schools and colleges on Friday.
