Last night’s matches culminated Champions league round of 16. Atletico Madrid faced Machester united and Ajax locked horns with Benfica. Both matches fetched the same result. The second leg will begin on 9th March.
Match no.1 Manchester United vs Atletico Madrid (1-1)
Atletico was hosting the toughest opposition since it faced Barcelona in Laliga. In what was expected to be an equally poised match, 90 minutes were not enough to separate these two teams.
Joao Felix opened the scoring for Atletico in the 8th minute and took a narrow 1-0 lead at the end of the first half. Star footballer Cristiano Ronaldo couldn’t work his magic against his favorite opposition. Anthony Elanga was brought on the pitch by Ralf Ragnick in the second half. He did exactly what he did against Leeds United on Sunday.
Elanga scored in the 80th minute and the match ended with the same score after 10 minutes. It was a highly physical match, the referee had to show the yellow card 9 times. Both teams will now face each other at Old Trafford on 16th March. They have everything to play for.
Match no.2 Ajax vs Benfica (2-2)
The reigning Dutch Champions Ajax paid a visit to Portugal and in a highly interesting and competitive match, they scored 2 goals each. The game was played at Benfica’s stadium, Estadio da Luz. Tadic opened the scoring for Ajax in the 18th minute.
Sebastian Haller, who has been in sublime form this season ended up putting the ball in his own net in the 26th minute. Three minutes later, he steered through Benfica’s defense and took the score 2-1. Roman Yaremchuk who came as a substitute equalized for Benfica in the 72nd minute.
A total of 31 fouls were committed and each side saw 3 yellow cards. Benfica will have a trip to the Netherlands on 16th March.
These matches ended the first leg of the pre-quarterfinals. Few of the matches were highly competitive and ended in a draw. The second leg will see teams playing for everything and it’s a win-win situation for the fans. All the results from the first leg-
